ARMY OFFICERS' INITIATIVE 1922. An important file of documents from the Dail Committee set up to pursue proposals by Dan Breen, Sean O'Hegarty & other southern IRA officers seeking to avoid a split over the Treaty. The file includes a typescript carbon copy of their statement to the Dail, with pencil annotations probably by Kathleen Clarke, about 10 pp of drafts of statements and agreements, typescript and manuscript, the typescript Majority Report of the Dail Committee and also the separate Report of the Republican delegation. * The Dail Committee, of which Kathleen Clarke was a member, was established to seek a formula based on the Army Officers' appeal, to halt the drift towards civil war and to enable an election to be held on agreed terms. It failed, due to intransigence on both sides, but its discussions paved the way for the 'Pact' agreement between De Valera and Collins, which itself was unsuccessful in the end. See RW p. 194-6, though some details in that account are not accurate. ARMY OFFICERS' INITIATIVE 1922.
