ARISTIDES, Aelius (A.D. 117-189). Orationes , in Greek. Edited by Euphrosynus Boninus. Florence: Filippo Giunta, 20 May 1517. 2 o (314 x 210 mm). Collation: a-z 8. 184 leaves. Greek and roman types. Initial spaces with printed guide letters. Printer's woodcut device on last verso. (Faint mostly marginal dampstain to first quire, first leaf slightly darkened.) 17th-century vellum, evidence of four pairs of tawed leather ties (somewhat worn, traces of worming). Provenance : Brussels, Jesuit College, 1636 (inscription and ink stamp, title page). EDITIO PRINCEPS. The Greek orator Aristides suffered for some years from an illness that may have been psychosomatic. He sought recovery through devotion to Asclepius, the Greek god of healing, and in his Sacred discourses gave a detailed account of the dreams he experienced at the temple of Asclepius at Pergamum and his cure by incubation. Galen cited him as an example of someone whose power of oratory had caused his whole body to waste away. Aristides' Sacred discourses were first published in this edition of his orations. Adams A-1702; Norman 68.
