Title: Archive of material relating to the art and antique purchases of William Randolph Hearst Author: Hearst, William Randolph Place: Various Places Publisher: Date: 1940s Description: Large archive containing approximately 90 pieces, including autograph notes, telegrams, cables, letters, photographs, etc. relating to Hearst's purchases of various antiques and art works. William Randolph Hearst's purchases of antiques and art are legendary and the present archive of materials shed light on his voracious appetite for collecting. Included are 5 autograph notes dictating telegraphs, signed W.R. Hearst along with the accompanying file copies of the telegraphs; several other autograph notes, signed; numerous cables and telegraphs (a few with holograph notations by Hearst) to and from his various agents including C.C. Rounds, Nick Yost, B.Y McPeake, and Lillian Wallen detailing Hearsts requests for estimates, bids he wishes to be placed, items to be purchased without regard to price, successful and unsuccessful bids, identities of high bidders on items of interest to Hearst, etc.; several photographs of items owned by Hearst; and more. Also included is a very interesting letter from Hearst executive Richard Berlin suggesting the sale of "unwanted and unused antiques" in an effort to protect the Hearst Foundations "dealer status" and a resulting savings of $1,765,000 in taxes, included is a list of evaluations of such unwanted and unused collections, ranging from $40.00 of "Indian Objects" to $2,327,205.36 of Tapestries, and totaling over $5,600,000.00. A fascinating archive! Lot Amendments Condition: Fine. Item number: 190610
