Title: Archive of letters and material related to Joaquin Miller, including an unfinished painted portrait of the California poet by George Innes Author: Place: Publisher: Date: Late 19th Century Description: Archive of hand-written and printed letters, plus a painted portrait of Joaquin Miller. Contents include: 33.5x23.5 cm (13x9") painted portrait of a bearded Joaquin Miller painted on linen. Written in faint pencil on verso: "J Miller Rock Mountain Pass." Not signed and unfinished, but attributed to George Innes in the accompanying autograph letter signed from John Mardock Connor to "Mrs. Greene." He writes: "I am sending the Joaquin Miller sketch I promised you. It is out of a folio that contains a number of rough preliminary or incomplete sketches that had been left by Geo. Innes in his studio at Eagleswood." Two typescripts housed in their original manila envelope with some pencil notes about Miller on outside. First typescript is 15 pp. titled "Some Personal Recollections of Joaquin Miller." The second is another draft of the same work, 15 pp. but the title has changed to "Some Reminiscences of Joaquin Miller." Two versions of a working biography the poet's friend, resident of New Jersey, friend of Joaquin's brother John, and later friend to Joaquin (believed to be A.V.D. Honeyman - lawyer and editor of The Somerset Gazette). The biography is very personal, covering Miller's thoughts on God, the afterlife, how he lost money on Wall Street, how he met his first wife, and his curious sense of fashion. Written after Miller's death in 1913. 8 pp. Autograph letter written on A.V.D. Honeyman Counsellor t Law / Editor of "The Somerset Gazette" Stationery in Sommerville, N.J. Letter written to Joaquin M. is dated May 29 ,1881. Discussing some money matters and other topics of discussion. 2 pp. Autograph letter signed from Joaquin's daughter Maud Miller to Mr. Honeyman. She responds to a letter from him, thanking him for his hospitality. Dated 1886? Invitation to the "Culinary Boudoir of Pot Luck Club," with a printed nonsensical poem to be read at the potluck. Dated March 12, 1882. Single printed sheet, top section cleanly torn off, but complete. Copy of an 1883 1 pp. letter from Van to Joaquin about the birth of Van's daughter, named Maud (just like Joaquin's own daughter). 2 pp. Autograph letter from Mrs. A[bigail] Miller, dated May 8th, '84. She writes to Mr. Honeyman in thanks for the information regarding the birth of his daughter Maud, and how her daughters are doing. 2 pp. Autograph letter signed from Van to Joaquin Miller upon his daughter Maud's death in 1901. A sad letter to a grieving father. Plus small group of receipts dating from the second half of the 19th century. Including a few dated 1869 for an account receivable from C.H. Miller (before he regularly used the name Joaquin). Lovely archive of materials related to the California frontiersman and poet Joaquin Miller. Gathered lovingly by family friend A.V.D. "Van" Honeyman. Honeyman was originally friends with Joaquin's brother Dr. John Miller who was a dentist in the same building where Honeyman practiced law. Upon John's untimely death, a close bond was formed between Honeyman and Joaquin. A family friendship ensued, and this archive shows the fondness that Honeyman has for Joaquin and his family. He even named his daughter Maud, after Joaquin's own daughter. Including some letters written to him. Plus a painted portrait of Miller by influential American landscape painter George Innes Lot Amendments Condition: Most letters folded, with wear and tear from handling and age; very good.
