Provenance : Elizabeth Douglas Hamilton; Thomas Hope (ca 1770-1831); Edwin M. Sincere (gift bookplate). Comprising: One large double-folding plan of the residence (tears at folds with repairs), 6 double-page elevations in ink and wash of the residence, 2 plans for the new galleries in ink and pencil, and 11 sheets of plans for the additions by C.H. Tatham, architects. The construction note on the front endpaper reads: "[the residence] which she began building in October one Thousand seven hundred sixty eight. It was finished in 1775. Account balanced and completely paid in June 1776: and the whole Expence of this House, viz. Building, Ground Rent (mean while) all paid out of her Annual Income, without having borrowed one shilling, and had only £500 beforehand, which she advanced when the Building was begun." The final group of eleven drawings include elevations and plans for additions to the house, presumably after it became the residence of Thomas Hope Most are dated 1799. Hope was a virtuoso and author from Amsterdam who settled in England around 1796. He was a patron of Canova, Thorwaldsen, and Flaxman.
