A total of 75 plates engraved on copper out text, of which 33 are folded. Signs of wear onbindings, restorations on titlepages and halftitles, some slight tears, deep wormholes on the margins of the third volume, overall good specimen.
Rare first edition, beautifully illustrated. A pioneering and very important work for the study of ancient and medieval diptychs, with an impressive iconographic apparatus. In particular, the first volume is still today the most complete study on the consular diptych by Flavius Nonius Arrius Manlius Boethius. This was the last work of the eminent etruscologist, expert in gems and ancient stones, scholar and writer of art, published posthumously by the student and friend G.B. Passeri. The plates are engraved by J. Vercruysse, Andrea Scacciati J.R. Holzhalb, J.G. Puschner, on Hyer's drawings, Ferroni and Giuseppe Bonaiuti.
