AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT DRAFT OF CHERRY-GARRARD'S ESSAY ON THE LIFE OF T.E. LAWRENCE, published in T.E. Lawrence by his Friends (London, 1937). Cherry-Garrard's appreciation of Lawrence is based not only on personal acquaintance but also on a shared experience of travel and adventure, and of over-achievement at the outset of adult life: 'It falls to few men to do something which no one else has ever done. To have done so before the age of thirty is astonishing'. The essay shows an acute appreciation of Lawrence's uncomfortable psychology -- 'It was as though he considered himself not only unworthy but sometimes unclean' -- and of the emotional fulfilment that the desert provided: 'The acerbity of the East, the austerity of the desert was to him a purification'. Cherry-Garrard met Lawrence in 1925 through their mutual friend, George Bernard Shaw. Lawrence admired Cherry-Garrard's The Worst Journey in the World calling it 'one of the great travel books' and signed Cherry's copy of Seven Pillars , 'A. C-G. from T.E. Shaw ... shamefacedly, for I feel that my bad journey is so much worse told than his'. (2)
