Claude Garamond's Greek type ( grecs du roi ) in 3 sizes. Printer's woodcut device (Schreiber B2) on title, ornamental woodcut headpieces and initials. (Repaired wormtrack in gutters of last few leaves, marginal wormhole from V6 to the end). 19th-century black morocco, sides gilt panelled, spine gilt, gilt edges, by Lloyd (some light wear at extremities, hinges lightly rubbed). EDITIO PRINCEPS, the first classical work printed in all three sizes of Garamond's grecs du roi type, one of a series of Greek texts printed by the Estiennes from manuscripts in the royal library. The Estienne Appianus is generally considered the best example of the use of the Royal Greek types. According to Updike, Printing Types , the volume is "one of the most exquisite books printed from these fonts". The elegant headpieces and initials are attributed to Geoffrey Tory.
