APPIANUS (c.100-c.170). Historia Romana (part II). Translated by Petrus Candidus Decembrius (1399-1477), additions by Raphael Zovenzonius. [Venice:] Vindelinus de Spira, 1472.
APPIANUS (c.100-c.170). Historia Romana (part II). Translated by Petrus Candidus Decembrius (1399-1477), additions by Raphael Zovenzonius. [Venice:] Vindelinus de Spira, 1472. Median (335 x 238mm). Collation: [1-410.8 5-68 710 8-128 1310 14-1710.8] (1/1 blank, 1/2r table of contents, 1/2v editor’s dedication to Alfonso V, King of Aragon, 1/3r text, 17/7v colophon, 17/8 blank). 146 (of 148, without first and final blank) leaves. 41 lines. Type: 1:110R2. 2- to 7-line initial spaces with guide-letter. Two sets of pinholes visible, occasional contemporary ms quiring. (A few small wormholes at beginning and end, very occasional faint stain.) ?18th-century quarter-vellum, title written on lower edges (rubbed, new spine labels, modern flyleaves). Provenance : G.J. Forster (19th-century signatures) – [Sotheby’s, 26 April 1990, lot 144] -- Livio Ambrogio (bookplate). FIRST EDITION , printed at the second shop at Venice. Appian's Greek narratives, describing Roman wars from the earliest times to the accession of Vespasian, were written in 24 books and survived in 10 with portions of others. Pier Candido Decembrio, his humanist translator, divided the surviving books into two parts; part two alone appeared first, and the complete work was not printed until 1477. A TALL, FRESH COPY , retaining two sets of pin-holes and some contemporary quiring. Vindelinus de Spira took over his brother’s shop in 1469 and implemented an ambitious printing programme. In some copies of a few editions, including the Appianus, a woodcut border appears, apparently applied in the rubricator’s shop as a guide; it is not present in this copy. H *1306; BMC V, 160 (IB.19552-4); BSB-Ink A-654; Bod-inc A-366; CIBN A-485; IGI 766; Goff A-931.
