FIRST EDITION. The headline for the text reads: "Mémoire... sur les cartes géographiques, insérées dans l'ouvrage composé par le P. DuHalde sur la Chine." The imprint: "A Pe-Kin, et se trouve á Paris." Among the missionaries who informed d'Anville's work was Claude de Visdelou, sent by Louis XIV to China in 1687. He gained a wide knowledge of Chinese language and culture, which is evident in d'Anville's history of the country. Brunet I:339; Cordier Sinica I:187.
