ANTONINUS FLORENTINUS Confessionale [including] Defecerunt scrutantes scrutinio . [Venice]: Bartholomaeus Cremonensis, 1473. 18th century full white vellum, all edges red. 9 1/2 x 7 1/8 inches (24 x 18 cm); 128 ff., rubricated throughout. The incipit soiled, with a couple of old marginal restorations, some dampstaining throughout, mostly in margins, occasional foxing. With the bookplate of Elijah Clarence Hills. Antoninus (1389-1459) was ordained Archbishop of Florence on 13 March 1446. An ascetic and a theologian of note, he compiled the Summa Theologica Moralis, and three different texts on confession, the three collectively referred to as the Confessionale but distinguished by their incipits. The present text, beginning Defecerunt scrutantes scrutinio, includes sections on the powers of the confessor, the seven deadly sins, the manner of interrogating persons of varying status, absolution and the imposition of penance.
