Tempesta (...) Accompagnée de plans et de cartes nouvelles. Amsterdam, M.M. Rey, 1770, folio, cont. half calf (def., joints and spine splitting), marbled paper on sides, gilt spine, [8]-xxxiv-76 pp. (very minor soiling, unobtrusive dampstain in smaller map). Exc. uncut copy.
New annotated ed. by Saint-Simon (1720-1799), French author active in Utrecht, of the engravings by Otto Vaenius (1556-1629) after Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630), publ. in "Batavorum cum Romanis Bellum" (1612). Consisting of 37 full-page engravings on 30 pls, 4 head and tail pcs by B. de Bakker, and 2 folding engr. maps of Europe after Ptolemy (old coloured). It is a series of allegorical engravings illustrating the armed struggle between the ancient Dutch tribes and their Roman oppressors inspired by Tacitus' history. Mod. bookpl. Robert Joostens . Ref.
