Title: Antiphonal manuscript on vellum Author: Place: France? Publisher: Date: 16th century Description: [6], 238 pp. With six-line staves of music with text beneath. Two major decorated initials; 'B' (Beatus) and 'E' (Estote). Frequent large and ornate initials in red and black ink. Red highlights used extensively (rubrication). 71x56 cm. (28x22"). Original binding of calf over wooden boards, with ornate metal corner protectors and five metal bosses on both panels. Notable for its binding, and the two beautiful initials. The Beatus initial, is based on the 'B ' from the opening words of Psalm one: 'Beatus vir qui non abiit in consilio impiorum' (Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly), and the Estote initial stands for: Estote fortes in bello' (Be strong in war). Due to the size of this lot extra shipping charges will apply. Lot Amendments Condition: Scratches to cover, shaken; some leaves loose, yellowing to hair side of vellum, last half of leaves missing bottom corners facing spine; very good. Item number: 248480
