More like paintings in graphite than drawings, they involve a complex range of techniques of masking and erasure, of painting with graphite dust as well as drawing with broad pencils. Incorporating textures and atmospheres are geometric forms, polar whites and intense blacks. Described by Chris Stevens who was curator of modern British art and head of displays at Tate Britain, as ‘some of the most powerfully evocative things that Benjamin produced.’
