Anthology of poetry Safavid Persia, mid-16th century Persian manuscript on buff paper, 36ff., each with lines of fine black nasta'liq written diagonally, horizontally and vertically, gold divisions between black rules, similar margin with blue outer rule, triangular panels within the text illuminated with gold and polychrome floral sprays, occasional words in gold on scrolling vine ground, (incomplete at end, negligible staining), opening folio with illuminated heading (possibly repainted), five bifolios throughout the text painted with pairs of peris on arabesque panels within the text, contemporary gold lacquer binding painted in black with a scene comprising a tree, animals below and a bird above in plain borders (repainted), gold-flecked blue paper doublures with a central stamped morocco medallion of a tree (light wear, one lacking) folio 6 x 2¼in. (15.2 x 5.8cm.)
