ANSON, George (1697-1762) – PHILIPS, John (fl. 1740). An Authentic Journal of the Late Expedition under the Command of Commodore Anson. London: J. Robinson 1744. The first edition of the first published account of the Anson expedition. George Anson sailed around the globe, raiding Spanish settlements in South America before traveling around Cape Horn to Macau, where his fleet captured a Spanish treasure galleon. Over three quarters of the sailors died of scurvy and other disease, and the crew of the Wager mutinied after the ship was separated from the rest of the fleet. Howgego A100; Sabin 62458. Octavo (197 x 117mm). Contemporary calf with red morocco label on spine (rebacked). Provenance : William Darwin (signature on title) – John Turk, HJH Exmouth 1893 (signature on pastedown) – Captain Dobbie, RN (label) – Wayfarer's Bookshop.
