Section of a makimono (narrative handscroll), ink and colours on paper, mounted on silk-covered board, framed and glazed, depicting an episode from the story of Oeyamairi, the attack on the mountain lair of the monster brigand Shuten Doji led by Minamoto no Raiko (Yorimitsu, 948–1021), the first scene with Raiko, Fujiwara no Hosho, and their four retainers, all in the guise of priests, Shuten Doji (distinguished by his headgear), his attendant ogres, and two ladies in junihitoe court dress, Raiko offering Shuten Doji some spiked sake given him earlier by a deity, the ogres overeating and vomiting; the next scene with an incapacitated senior ogre being carried off by two ogres, the scenes framed by stylized bands of cloud and executed in fukinukiyatai style with the roofs and walls removed.
