ANONYMOUS. Augusta Taurinorum . [Turin?: c. 1610]. Woodcut plan of Turin, 358 x 397mm. Title set in a strapwork cartouche incorporating the arms of the Duke of Savoy and the arms of Savoy and Turin, dedication in decorative strapwork cartouche. (Trimmed to image and laid down, some light browning to margins.) EXTREMELY RARE WOODCUT. This detailed representation of Turin records the arrangement of the houses and extent of the city's fortifications. The dedication records the city's allegiance to Charles Emmanuel I (1562-1630), Duke of Savoy, who succeeded his father Emmanuel Philibert in 1580. The plan may be identical to British Library 20905 (20). [ With :] BAILLIEU, Gaspard (18th-century). Carte particuliere des environs de Turin . Paris: for the author, [1700]. Engraved military map of Turin and its environs on an imperial half sheet, 404 x 548mm (engraving 372 x 442mm). Title in cartouche upper right, scalebar in lower margin below border, imprint in upper margin above border. (Some light staining.) This map of Turin and its environs is Bailleul's first known work. He was an engineer and geographer working in Paris. The map shows the settlements and tributaries along the river Po between Chivas and Carmagnole, indicating the movements of the armies of the King of France and of the Duke of Savoy. (2)
