Annette Fernando It's Changed From Something Comfortable to Something Else Instead III Giclee Print 1/1 Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) About Annette Fernando is a London based artist of French, Italian and Sri Lankan heritage. Her work looks at the representation of people in everyday situations, including the representation of women and sensuality in cinema across the last century. The manipulation of time is a vital element in her work; she slows down film, freezing frames, and selects out of 24 frames per second, a frame to paint. Painting is a long laborious process, being a further manipulation of time. A fraction of a second stretched further with hours of rendering. By selecting one single frame, she exposes it and draws it into attention, making the viewer re-engage and rethink moments so easily taken for granted. Education BA Fine Art, Central Saint Martins Foundation in Art and Design, Camberwell College of Art Select Exhibitions/Awards Awards: 2021 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2021, selected by Yinka Shonibare 2014 Winner of the Jerwood Drawing Prize Student Award (Now Trinity Bouy Wharf drawing Prize) 2014 Signature Art Prize longlist 2013 Selected for Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013 Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork These works are from a series called 'It's Changed From Something Comfortable, to Something Else Instead'. The title is taken from the lyrics of a PULP song 'Live Bed Show'. In this series I am re-appropriating cinematic images of femininity away from the male gaze. I was interested in capturing private moments of longing, desire and isolation, all of which are particularly poignant in light of the pandemic we are currently living in. The style of this work is rooted in the realm of comic books, romantic pulp novels and film noir.
