Anna Peters (b. Germany 1843, d. 1926) Still life with garden tools and a bush by a wall. Signed Peters. Oil on canvas. 99.5×74 cm. Anna Peters was born into a family of painters and was trained by her father, the Dutch landscape painter Pieter Francis Peters (1818–1903). She was the first German female painter who could make a living selling her paintings. Peters is especially known for her Dutch-style flower paintings. Landscape paintings are also known from her hand and in the late 90'es her manner develops towards the impressionistic style. Peters exhibited in Berlin, München, Dresden and Paris and won medals for her work in 1873, 1874, 1876 and 1877. From 1880 she was a member of Berliner Künstlerinnen, and a co-founder of Württembergische Malerinnenverein (The Society of Women Artists in Württemberg), The purpose of the society was to support women as working artists and one of the methods was to offer classes in studies of the nude figure, something which women were not permitted to study at this time in The Royal Art school in Stuttgart. Peters chaired the society in 1893–1902 and again in 1904–1919. Provenance: Bruun Rasmussen auction 1831, 2018 no. 49.
