ANIMAL RIGHTS - THOMAS FORSTER AND HIS FAVOURITE DOG A pair of 1818 and 1823 stampless entires sent to Dr Forster (one is addressed to Hackney, Middlesex), both with several sides of correspondence and also bearing a large illustrated circular cachet in red reading "T. FORSTER FLS * SHARGS 1838" to commemorate the death of his favourite dog "Shargs", these apparently applied some time after the event. Dr Thomas Forster (1789-1860) was an astronomer and naturalist, and an early advocate of animal rights, a transcript of the lengthy tomb inscription he wrote for "Shargs" is included. (2 entires)
