Full-page engraved royal coat-of-arms above cityscape of Lisbon seen from the harbor (backed repairing old tear), full-page portrait of the author dated 1721, both by Bernard Picart engraved calligraphic part title, and 44 engraved numbered plates (pale stain in upper margins), woodcut title ornament, head- and tail-pieces. Contemporary Portuguese marbled calf gilt, red morocco lettering-piece (a few repairs). Provenance : acquired from E. P. Goldschmidt, 1963. FIRST EDITION, issue of the title reading "e Previlegio Real" added after the license statement. Campos Ferreira Lima describes three different issues of the first edition, distinguished by the typography of the title. The frontispiece with royal arms and a view of Lisbon and the portrait of the author are the work of Bernard Picart (1673-1733), working from Amsterdam.
