3.5 x 5 in., Camp Sumpter, Ga. June 20th 1864, from Thomas Park 101 PA Infy. (on some rolls listed as Parks) stating that One month after date I promise to pay J. R. Bruce the sum of twenty dollars for value received. One wonders whether that debt was ever repaid. Sgt. James R. Bruce, also a member of the 101st PA died at Andersonville prison on 10 Sept. 1864 of "chronic diarrhea." He is listed as being in Grave 8363. Sgt. Park was released 28 Feb. 1865, and later applied for an invalid pension because of a crippled right leg and deafness in his right ear, leaving him unable to earn a living by manual labor. On April 20, 1864 the Union garrison at Plymouth, NC was captured, in all over two thousand men, among them the 101st Pennsylvania. They thus dubbed themselves the "Plymouth Pilgrims" after their march to Andersonville, where they remained for the better part of a year. Condition: Folds and light toning.
