Petersen is best known for his body of work made at Café Lehmitz, a bar in Hamburg. Raw and intimate, the imagery documents the late-night regulars, including prostitutes, cross-dressers, lovers, drunks, and drug addicts. The resulting photobook is regarded as one of the seminal European titles of the 20th century. Petersen co-founded SAFTRA, the Stockholm group of photographers, in 1970.
