AN URBINO SIGNED AND DATED ISTORIATO PLATE 1534, THE REVERSE INSCRIBED ·1534· Del Tirannico Stato de DioniSio Syragu Sano, essempio ·F·X· BY FRANCESCO XANTO AVELLI Painted with the 'Sword of Damocles', in a palace interior with King Dionysius II on the left entering a high beamed chamber through a classical doorway, the centre of the room with a table laid with a goblet, wine, knives, a salt and a plate, two servants carrying vessels, Damocles seated in a throne with a sword suspended above him, two servants attending him with a tureen and a (rosewater?) ewer, a dog below the table chewing on a bone, within a blue line and yellow band rim (rim chip at 10 o'clock, slight chipping and losses to glaze at rim, crack around well with associated small loss at 10 o'clock, edge of well with very slight losses to glaze) 10 1/8 in. (25.7 cm.) diam.
