Beschreibung:

An unusually large posted thirty-hour longcase clock movement and dial Giles Bennett, Malmesbury, mid 18th century The substantial single-handed posted movement countwheel striking on a bell measuring 8 inches in diameter set above the top plate, the frame measuring 8 inches high by 7 inches square with rectangular section steel uprights enclosing particularly heavy wheelwork, separately wound trains and anchor escapement regulated by seconds pendulum swinging to the rear, the 13.75 inch square brass dial with crown and foliate border engraved calendar aperture to the matted centre and pierced blued steel hand within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with fleur-de-lys half hour markers and signed G. Bennett, Malmesbury to lower margin, the angles with applied female mask and scroll cast spandrels. Giles Bennett is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in Malmesbury 1752-66. The particularly substantial construction of the current lot is unusual and suggests that it was a one-off special commission. The crown engraved above the calendar aperture may provide a clue as to the reason why this movement and dial came to be made.
