An unusual 12-bore French percussion rifled carbine By Nicholas-Noel Boutet, Versailles, circa 1800 Converted from flintlock, with sighted swamped octagonal polygroove rifled barrel signed 'Boutet Directeur Artiste' 'Manufacture à Versailles' at the breech and with four small maker's stamps and traces of incised and gilt decoration, the muzzle rounded and fitted with a small lug for a bayonet, finely engraved tang, signed border engraved bevelled lock, figured walnut three-quarter stock (cracked and repaired) carved in relief with a rosette on the cheek-piece and with beadwork and foliage behind the grip, finely chequered grip and fore-end, finely engraved iron mounts including trigger-guard with urn finial, set trigger, baluster ramrod-pipes, iron sling mounts, and original brass-tipped ramrod with reversable worm 29¾in.
