Unknown photographer: An original black-and-white press photograph of Sir Winston Churchill (1874–1965) on his way to St. George's Chapel at Windsor on June 14th 1954, where The Queen is to make him a member of The Most Noble Order of the Garter. Back with American news telegram with a description of the events. Photo size 23×16 cm. Frame size 43×33 cm. After World War II King George VI offered to make Winston Churchill duke of Dover, yet he reclined because he knew that a seat in the House of Lords would cost him his the seat among the commoners, who had had the real political power since a reform back in 1910. This situation he did not want. Churchill also turned down the Most Noble Order of the Garter in the immediate post-war era and did not accept the honour before 1954, when Queen Elizabeth II brought up the idea again. Many observers saw the accept as the beginning of his farewell to a life in politics. In 1955 he passed on the responsibility as Prime Minister to Sir Anthony Eden.
This is an original black-and-white press photograph from 1954, which shows normal signs of age and handling, including surface cracklings. Back and attached news telegram yellowed due to ageing. Please note that Bruun Rasmussen Auctioneers has not physically examined this item, the estimate is solely based on the seller’s photographic material.
