Unknown photographer: An original b/w press photo of Sir Winston Churchill (1874–1945) lighting a Romeo y Julieta cigar. Ca. 1945. Photo size 21.5×18 cm. Frame size 43×33 cm. Churchill's lifelong passion for cigars was established when he as a young officer in 1895 was stationed i Cuba in order to observe the island's fight for independence from Spain. The rest of his life he smoked around 10 cigars a day, preferable Romeo y Julieta. At Chartwell, his country estate in Kent, he constantly kept a year's stock of his favoured brand - approx. 4,000 cigars!
This is an original black-and-.white photograph from ca. 1945, which shows normal signs of age and wear as well as a few superficial cracklings. The back has somewhat yellowed.
