An Italian gilt metal, micro mosaic mounted and enamelled casket, circa 1875, of oval section, the hinged cover with a mosaic depiction of the ruins of the Flavian Amphitheatre within a black marble setting, with beaded borders, above stylised foliate mounts with blue and white enamel infill, on four openwork foliate cast feet; the crimson silk lined interior inscribed for 'C.ROCCHEGGIANI, ROMA', 9.5cm high, 15cm wide Cesare Roccheggiani was a famed mosaicist from a family of noted artisans and craftsmen, members of his family having exhibited at the London and Paris Exhibitions of 1851 and 1855 prior to his own rise to success. Roccheggiani worked at the Vatican Mosaic Workshop from 1856 until 1864, starting business on his own account firstly at 125, Bubuino, and later at 14-15 Via Condotti, both workshops having been in close proximity to the Piazza di Spagna.
