AN IRON-RED AND GRISAILLE -DECORATED PORCELAIN PLAQUE REPUBLIC PERIOD (1912-1949) The rectangular plaque is decorated in a painterly style with a luohan wrapped in an iron-red cloak, and holding prayer beads, seated on a mat of leaves on a rocky promontory as he contemplates the vapor rising from an incense burner on a tray beside him. The rocks and background are painted in grisaille and sepia. An inscription in archaistic characters in black, followed by an iron-red seal, Wangbu, is in the upper right corner, and a large iron-red seal, changhu , in the lower left corner. 15 1/8 x 9 7/8 in. (38.4 x 25 cm.)
