An interesting early Victorian sterling silver gilt ‘naturalistic’ comport or dessert stand, London 1838 by Benjamin Preston The bowl section formed as a lobed circular form with rocaille scalloped edge, raised upon two foliate form scroll sections adjoining the bowl section as bifurcated twin scroll handles, all upon a domed collet base chased as a mount with foliage. Fully marked underneath the bowl section. Diameter – 22 cm / 8.7 inches Height – 15.6 cm / 6.1 inches Weight – 936 grams / 30.09 ozt A dessert stand of the same design of 1834 by same maker is illustrated Brett, V. (1986). The Sotheby’s Directory of Silver 1600-1940. London: Philip Wilson. p. 273. Fig. 1262. This stand is stamped K. LEWIS ST JAMES, for the retailer and antiquarian Kensington Lewis who was associated with Preston 1834-36. Lewis being best known for showcasing the wares of Edward Farrell earlier in the 19th century, most noticeably for the extensive service commissioned by the Duke of York. The design for this stand is very likely to have been drawn upon Frederick Knight’s Vases and Ornaments 1833, the two most similar drawings illustrated in Culme, J. (1977), 19th Century Silver.
