AN IMPORTANT GERMAN SILVER-GILT MOUNTED NAUTILUS-CUP AND COVER maker's mark of Johannes Clauss I, Nuremburg, circa 1630/40 The rim to the octafoil domed base chased with a band of alternating lobes and flutes, the centre raised with lobes and applied with alternate scrollwork and figures of Mars within scroll cartouches, the stem modelled as the satyr Pan kneeling on a ground of simulated earth and rocks applied with a salamander, cold-painted enamel lobster, beetle and frog, the figure of Pan supporting with his up-raised arms the large shell enclosed within openwork foliage and female demi-figure straps, the broad border etched with mythological marine scenes, the shoulder of the shell with an applied cast figure of a lion courant , the domed cover repoussé and chased with dolphins and sea-nymphs and surmounted with the standing figure of Neptune (lacking trident) facing the lion, the interior of the shell applied with a cast figure of a dragon, marked on base, shell border and cover 52 cm. (20½ in.) high
