An 'Immediate' 2nd War D.C.M. Group of Six to Sergeant R. Carr, 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, for the Armoured Thrust Through Holland, Distinguished Conduct Medal, G.VI.R. (Sjt. 5-R.Innis.D.G.); G.S.M. 1918-62, G.VI.R., one clasp, Palestine (Tpr.); 1939-45 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals, good very fine INDENT D.C.M. London Gazette 1.3.1945. Sergeant Raymond Carr, 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, R.A.C. (Moulton Northants). The recommendation for an 'Immediate D.C.M.' states: "On 24 Oct. 44 Sgt Carr was leading a Tp of "A" Sqn. During the night 23/24 Oct. two Bns of 158 Inf Bde had advanced from Rosmalen along the railway to the Eastern outskirts of s'Hertogenbosch under cover of darkness. On the morning of 24 Oct "A" Sqn was ordered to move up to support 1 S Lancs in that area. Preliminary recce revealed that the route taken by the infantry below the embankment was too boggy to be practicable for tanks. The only possible route for the tanks was along the railway which was raised on an embankment 15 ft above the surrounding country and in full view of enemy positions on both flanks. Anti-Tank guns had already been reported in action in the area Hintham 3447 some 400 yards South of the vly and though being engaged by another sqn were not known to have been neturalised, others were reported along the dyke between Herven 3248 - Heinis 3448 500 - 1,000 yards North of the dominating rly. Sgt Carr with complete disregard for his personal safety, led his troop with the greatest determination and dash along the rly line itself for 1,000 yds and was able to find a passable route North of the embankment. This route being defiladed from the South by the embankment was still in full view of the enemy positions to the North. Sgt Carr continued his advance, reporting the state of the going to his Sqn Leader as he did so and succeeded in reaching s'Hertogenbosch and making contact with 1 E Lancs in the town. As a result of Sgt Carr's gallant and hazardous advance the remainder of the Sqn were able to move up to support 1 E Lancs and complete the operation of mopping up the Eastern outskirts of the town." Carr is mentioned in the Regimental History in relation to a tank action in the Caen area, France, July 1944. A crew baled out and abandoned their knocked out tank; they were attacked by some German infantry who had managed to make their way forward..."but the tank commander, Corporal Carr, snatched his sten gun from the blazing tank, shot down the three leading Germans, and so gained elbow room for the withdrawal of his crew and himself to safety."
