Also the history and reasons of his conversion to Christianity, with his objections against it (in defence of paganism) and their answers Author: Psalmanazar, George [pseud.] Place: London Publisher: Printed for Dan. Brown Date: 1704 Description: [8], xiv, [2], 331 (misnumbered 131), [5] pp. With 12 (of 16) copper-engraved plates. (8vo) 7½x4½, modern cloth. First Edition. Scarce work, considered today a fabrication. The author's real name is unknown. The D.N.B. notes that "Psalmanazar ... wrote in Latin, and the main portion of his manuscript was translated by Mr. Oswald ... What was not due to his own imagination he borrowed from Varenius's 'Descriptio regni Japoniæ et Siam' (Amsterdam, 1649) or Candidius's 'Voyages'." Lacking 4 of the plates, including the folding alphabet table. Lot Amendments Condition: Some foxing and darkening to contents, bookplate of American Museum of Natural History with withdrawl rubberstamp, which is also present on title-page verso an is slightly visible from the recto, very good.
