An extraordinary tropical pigeon which may be unique.
This tropical pigeon is very similar to a species that was once found on the Marquesas Islands in the Pacific: the Marquesas Moustached Fruit Dove (Ptilinopus mercerii). Considered extinct by the 1920s the species is now known only from just a handful of museum examples. This particular specimen carries the purple/red moustache of that species but differs slightly in other ways. However, it matches no other known pigeon. It is therefore a mystery and may represent the only example of an extinct species. It is presented under an oval shaped glass dome.
