An extensive collection of black and white magic lantern slides by Johan W. Schotman (1892-1976) China, 1921-1927 The collection comprises 256 images of which 250 numbered and classified as: I. Peking (1-50) II. Treaty harbours (51-73) III. Haitsjow (74-100) IV. Geography (101-112) V. Houses and buildings (113-141) VI. Means of transport (142-150) VII. Island of Mên-Li-Shan-(151-173) VIII. Volkstypen (174-196) IX. Geestelijke stromingen (197-234) X. Schaduwzijden (235-242) Various subjects (242-250) In three wooden boxes and a double box. N.B. I: This collection is of cultural and historical significance as these provide a picture of the mainly pre-industrial age of the Chinese countryside at the start of the last century. Schotman was sent to China by the Dutch-Chinese Syndicat and stayed there from 1921 up to 1927. As a docter Schotman was employed at the island Xi Lian Dao, afterwards he stayed at Haizhou and as a docter was involved in the construction of the Lung Hai railway. Schotman was a real jack of all trades: he studied medicin in Leiden, translated from latin De vertroosting der Wijsbegeerte by Boëthius, was a beekeeper, spoke Chinese, established himself as a neurologist in Gouda in 1937, was appointed as director of the Provinciaal Overijssels Geschiedkundig museum in Zwolle in 1954 and translated from Chinese the Boek der Oden (Sji Tsjing).
