The broad (1 7/8" at the ricasso) 30 inch double edged blade with three deep 6 inch fullers faintly inscribed X I N I X below maker's marks in the form of an orb, one retaining traces of copper inlay. Ricasso with deep fullers on either edge. Steel hilt composed of bars of rectangular section with five panels heart-shaped and circular piercings, the outermost with scrolling finial. Quillon with broad, rolled finial. Conical pommel incised with four panels of three narrow lines and marked 56 below the broad, low capstan. Ebonized wooden grip carved with a spiral groove. Condition: Blade with dark, mottled patina showing areas of pitting, the edge with scattered small nicks, the point rounded and slightly tipped. Hilt showing scattered light pitting, fracture to one bar and possibly some older restoration. See Illustration
