Beschreibung:

An early 20th century Martin Brothers stoneware vase of squat, bulbous form, with handles modelled as lizards holding the rim of the vase in their mouths, with their tails wrapping around the lower section, the brown textured body underglazed in green, 20.5 cm high x 25 cm wide, inscribed marks to base, dated 11-1911. Literature: 'The Martin Brothers Potters' by Malcolm Haslam, published Richard Dennis, 1978; page 144 for an image of a similar vase with matching date. Provenance: Part of a single owner collection originally acquired directly from the Martin Brothers Pottery, by Samuel L. M. Avery Esq., a master builder and resident of Southall. Avery was a friend and acquaintance of the Martin family, often visiting the pottery where he bought pieces directly from them for his own collection. The collection was inherited by his descendants and has remained in the family ever since, only being recently discovered following the passing of his daughter. CONDITION REPORT Firing cracks visible to the limbs of the applied lizards, surface marks and glaze imperfections throughout, but no apparent structural damage.
