An Aikuchi tanto and associated lacquer boxes Edo Period (18th - 19th Century) Sugata [configuration]: Thick hirazukuri blade, uchizori, kissaki kareru Kitae [forging pattern]: Itame nagare Hamon [tempering pattern]: Suguha with variations, wide on the ura , and tighter on the omote with much midareba Boshi [tip]: Midarekomi Nakago [tang]: Ubu, katte agari file marks, two mekugi-ana , acute ha-agai kurijiri tip Habaki [collar]: Single gold Nagasa [length of blade]: 39.5cm. Koshirae [mounting]: Fine quality gold migakiji lacquer aikuchi koshirae with roundels of various flowers in gold maki-e with aogai and gold leaf, gilt metal mekugi formed as butterfly mon , together with a black lacquer document box with gold maki-e stylized waves and roundel butterfly mon , chrysanthemums floating along the waves, and free flying butterflies, another black lacquer box with stylized waves with fans with and maki-e butterfly mon in gold and silver maki-e with gold leaf on a nashiji ground, an interior tray with inkstone and gilt copper water dropper engraved with butterflies Boxes: 34.2cm. and 39.5cm. long
