Drawn up from the Journals which were kept by the several Commanders, and from the Papers of Joseph Banks, Esq.; by John Hawkesworth LL.D. Author: Hawkesworth, John Place: Dublin Publisher: James Potts Date: 1775 Description: 2 volumes. [6] leaves, [i]-xxviii, 3-489; [5] leaves, 539 pp. Large folding map and 3 copperplate engravings inserted in first volume; 4 copperplates in second volume. 7½x4½. Original full calf with maroon lettering pieces and gilt ornaments. Scarce Irish edition of Hawkesworth's official account of Cook's first voyage, as well as the other voyages named in the title. Nicely executed 24¾x13½ copperplate map "A Chart of Part of the South Seas" shows the routes of Cook, Byron, and Wallis. Another Dublin edition of the same year issued by James Williams had 1 map more and 1 plate fewer than the Potts edition. Sabin 30937, this edition not in Beddie or Hill. Lot Amendments Condition: Front joints of both volumes cracked, but cords holding tight, old stains to covers, edges rubbed, worming through page xxviii of first volume and into map, though holes are small. Moderate foxing to text, but plates and map are quite bright. Good. Item number: 168469
