Samuel Turner (1759-1802), English diplomat, Asiatic traveler and cousin of Warren Hastings, was dispatched from India on a mission to Tibet in 1783 following news of the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, with a message of congratulation designed to strengthen the amicable relations established by George Bogle during his 1774 visit to Tibet. Although unable to visit the Tibetan capital at Lhasa, he did have an audience with the infant Panchen Lama at Shigatse in Tibet's Tsang Province, and received a promise that merchants sent to the country from India would be encouraged. Lot Amendments Condition: Some minor scuffing and wear to covers, corners showing, the original spine strip rubbed with lower ¾" missing and a little loss at top; some moderate foxing and offsetting within, very good, a nice copy of a significant work on Tibet.
