ca 1848-1860. Etched Ames Manufacturing Co. Chicopee MA. 31" blade with typical deep, wide blood fuller in center on both sides and floral and military motifs. Imposing cross-guard in the form of a spread-winged patriotic eagle sitting on shield. Cast silver handle with typical brass knight's head pommel and gold-gilded chain running from head to eagle's wings. Brass scabbard with brass fittings. The brass scabbard appears to have been originally silver plated. Provenance: Ex Pete and Jackie Kersten Collection Condition: Pommel and eagle retaining much of the gold gilt in protected areas. Blade has been lightly cleaned. Etched panels are legible. Scabbard with a few nominal dents and retains original traces of silver plating in protected areas.
