Manuscript receipt, in a secretarial hand, for a John Lawrence "for the sum of two pounds ten shillings in full __ the 24 of July last, for the Gazette"; docketed on verso. Creasing from original folds, separations along same; scattered soiling. A rare receipt for the Pennsylvania Gazette from Benjamin Franklin and David Hall's print shop, possibly made out to John Lawrence (1729-96), lawyer, mayor of Philadelphia from 1765-66, who later served as a justice on the Supreme Court from 1767 until the revolution, and was suspected of being a Loyalist and possibly imprisoned.
