19th century, with base carved on each side in fan motif with carved shield motif below on one face with engraved inscription Oct. 4th 1837/The whale from/whose jaw this/tooth was drawn reverse with engraved artists initials in arch below fan E.A.C. and pin-pricked inscription below E.A.C. to J.L.B. The remaining body of this tooth is covered with pin-pricked titled figures of African Lioness, Female Camel, G?antio Crane a soldier with bugle entitled Military and several untitled figures such as a galloping horse, palm tree, stars, whaling ships, and side-wheel steamer. Additional two-line pin-pricked inscription reads No earthly object to be seen/But some old geese upon the green, 5.5" long. Condition: Shield and arch above have had some inlaid substance, not present; minor chips to fans.
