Autograph letter signed ("James Clinton," with flourish) to his wife, Fort Constitution [West Point], NY, [August, 1776]. 1 page, small 4to . CLINTON REJOICES OVER HIS PROMOTION TO BRIGADIER GENERAL. An interesting letter in which James Clinton proudly informs his wife about his recent promotion. Writing from Fort Constitution, the future location of West Point, Clinton acknowledges the receipt of two significant letters: "I have Received a letter last night from the Hon le John Hancock with a Commission Inclosed to me Appointing Me a Brigadier Gen l . In the Continental Army and another Letter from his Excellency Gen l Washington Congratulating me on the Appointment." Clinton notes that Washington wants him to remain at his location as he knows of no other officer "to take the command of those Important Passes." Clinton writes: "Its Possible I may be soon ordered to New York as I am appointed to Command four Reg t s my Reg t here being one of them." James Clinton began the war as Colonel of the 3rd New York, which he led into combat during General Montgomery's campaign against Quebec. After his appointment as Brigadier General, Clinton took command of the Northern Department in 1781 and, in the Fall of that year, participated in the Yorktown Campaign.
