Title: American Painters: With Eighty-Three Examples of Their Work Engraved on Wood Author: Sheldon, G.W. Place: New York Publisher: Appleton & Co. Date: 1879 Description: 184 pp. 83 engraved plates. (Quarto) 10½x8, original green pictorial cloth with design in gilt, black, and maroon, all edges gilt. First Edition. Wood engravings after painting by 50 American artists, including Frederick Church, Thomas Moran Winslow Homer George Inness Thomas Hicks Albert Bierstadt Albert Bellows. Maul Lee Flood's copy with her Linden Towers bookplate to front pastedown. Maud was the wife of Comstock Lode mining baron James C. Flood. Linden Towers was their mansion in the San Francisco Penninsula city of Menlo Park. The bookplate is engraved with a view of the opulent mansion. Lot Amendments Condition: Corners rubbed with boards showing; front free endpaper skinned and with holes and residue from something removed, else very good in publisher's handsome decorative binding.
