Handwritten document on lined paper, "1914 Census Roll / of Lapointe Band / Bad River Reservation." 59pp, 8 x 10.5 in. (first and last pages heavily toned with losses, else mostly good). Listing of individuals of the Bad River Lapointe Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians, an Ojibwe tribe of northern Wisconsin. The document is organized alphabetically by English or Indian family name, and includes first name, relationship to head of family (ie. wife, daughter, son, orphan, etc.), as well as year of birth for each resident and sex. In total there are 1222 individuals on the census followed by classifications: "Number of males to 20 years inclusive / 280; Number of males 21 years and over / 334; Number of Females to 17 years inclusive / 233; Number of Females 18 years and over / 375; School children between 5 & 18 years inclusive / 363." Document appears to be in at least two hands, possibly more. The Bad River Reservation was established by the 1854 Treaty of Lapointe. Indian Census Rolls were submitted annually by agents or superintendents in charge of a reservation to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs as required by an act of July 4, 1884. The National Archives says this about the La Pointe Agency: "In 1858, an agency was established for the Chippewa of Lake Superior, who for five years had been under the Mackinac Agency. The new agency's correspondence was filed under 'La Pointe,' although it was not located at La Pointe and was known for several years as the Chippewa of Lake Superior Agency or the Lake Superior Agency. By 1865, now known as the La Pointe Agency, although it operated from Superior, Wisconsin, from the Red Cliff Reservation, or from Bayfield, Wisconsin, opposite La Pointe. The Indians assigned to La Pointe were than living on several reservations in Wisconsin and Minnesota. In 1927, the La Pointe Agency, the Laona Agency, the Red Cliff Agency, and the Mackinac Agency consolidated into the Lac du Flambeau Agency, effective July 1, 1927."
