lot of 2. Includes a Cree doll with an embroidered face and with quilled hide clothing trimmed with fur. Doll may be non-Indian because when left moccasin is removed the foot is actually plaster over another material. Original label dates doll to about 1935 . Label states doll is Alaskan, but peaked hood and quillwork indicate Cree. height 19 in. AND a Navajo doll wearing traditional velvet shirt and calico skirt, height 10 in. ca Cree doll 1935; Navajo doll 1950. Dr. Kent Vickery (1942 - 2011) grew up with parents who were avid collectors of Native American Southwestern arts and crafts. Kent started developing his own collection in the 1950's while on family vacations. Summer excursions to various Pueblos and to the Gallup Ceremonials sparked a true love in Kent and spurred him to earn his PhD from Indiana University in Anthropology/ Archaeology where he specialized in Ohio Valley archaeology. He taught at the University of Cincinnati in the Anthropology Department for almost 34 years and on retirement, he and his wife, Karen, moved to Woodland Park, CO. Provenance: From the Collection of Dr. Kent and Karen Vickery, Colorado Condition: Cree doll clothing missing some quillwork; Navajo doll fine with age.
