Lot of 2 lightly hand-colored tintypes, each approx. 4.25 x 6.5 in., photographer unknown, ca 1880s. A rare pair of images featuring group portraits of young American Indian students that appear to range in age from 5 to 10 years old. The first tintype shows 17 girls dressed in almost identical uniforms, posed together in front of a simple white backdrop, situated inside a tent. The second tintype shows 12 younger children wearing uniforms, mostly boys, gathered in front of the same backdrop, with the tent wall visible in the background. Consignor relates that the images were originally found in eastern Pennsylvania, suggesting that they may document students that attended the Carlisle Indian School. However, without further documentation, this cannot be confirmed. Condition: Some surface wear to each tintype, including some scratches. Few creases in each plate. Horizontal plate showing mostly young boys with short split in plate along lower margin (near center).
